food pyramidAre you eating healthy? Let’s look at how the food pyramid can help you live a healthy lifestyle. After all, if you are not eating healthy, then you won’t be around very long to enjoy all the food that is available on God’s green earth. The food pyramid is a simple view on how food can be a healthy part of our lives. The layout of the food pyramid varies in different ways, but the concept and the principles therein are the same.

There are 6 main food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, oils, meats and beans, and milk and dairy products. A well-balanced diet will consist of elements of each of these food groups from the food pyramid. Your age and weight will also determine the amount that you should have from each of the food groups from the food pyramid. Candy and donuts didn’t quite make the food pyramid as a food group, but they would be classified under the oils and fats category. Based on a 2000 calorie a day diet, we need to be aware of all the different places our calories and food intake is. This will help you match up what part of teh food pyramid is taking too much space and which food groups are lacking. Using the food pyramid will help you make healthy decisions about your diet.

To understand more about the food pyramid, go to the USDA’s website MyPyramid.gov for more details on the food pyramid.

In addition to the website, this video may make things easier to understand the food pyramid:
